back side / dos à la mode

In one of my more recent posts, I invited you to walk with me through some of my saved photographic memories from the past 5 years. I decided to start by going all the way back to the days just before the world so dramatically changed during the pandemic, which also coincides so simultaneously with when I became a mother for the first time. It was a wonderful day spent walking the streets of Paris while pregnant with our first daughter, stopping in at 4 exhibitions along the way.  A day which will always live on in my fondest memories, that day I fell in love with the freedom I found in streets of Paris all over again. I so vividly remember my appreciation of freedom to live this way and explore the cities culture on my doorstep. Which was almost ironic since that freedom was then so rapidly taken away from us when our daughter was born, during the pandemic in March of 2020.

I will start by sharing: The back side / dos a la mode exhibition at Musee Bourdelle, once again this beautiful sculpture museum was curated so seamlessly to house some of the most incredible couture fashion pieces alongside the sculptural works of Antoine Bourdelle. The exhibition entirely devoted to fashion garments seen from the back throughout this monumental space.

Antoine Bourdelle sculpture workshop is where I always began my visits in the museum. I found this space in the museum filled with such understated beauty, and in this case set so beautifully alongside these two impressive dresses by Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons pieces.

Antonie Bourdelle’s house, studio and garden: the Musee Bourdelle where he lived and worked from 1884-1929 is, in my opinion, one of the most incredible museums to visit in Paris. A must visit in fact! The scale of his sculptures and the architectural space is really something to behold.

I have since found out that Antonie Bourdelle’s house towards the end of his life was based in Le Vesinet, the beautiful little village we now call home just outside Paris.

The following post is very image heavy, intentionally so, I have decided to share as many images from the exhibition as so many of you lovely readers come from so far across the globe and sometimes it is just such a beautiful experience to immerse yourself into a virtual fashion exhibition. Enjoy !

“In our society obsessed with the face, Back Side / Dos à la mode is an original and unexpected subject. By addressing the links of the body to clothing from a social and psychological point of view, the exhibition questions the perception we have of our backs and that of others.”
